Weekly Meditation
A Long Epiphany

The Christian calendar has two anchors, Christmas and Easter. Christmas is always fixed at December 25th. But, because Easter is based on the spring equinox and the cycles of the moon, it can come as early as March 22nd (as it last did in 1818) or as late as April 25th (as it will in 2038). Epiphany is the season that spans the time from Christmas to Lent which leads to Easter; and its length varies according to the date of Easter. Since Easter is April 24th this year, we are celebrating the longest Epiphany since 1943.

This long Epiphany means we have not read this particular combination of Lectionary readings before. As I was reading these lessons, one theme I saw was how God cares for all his creatures. Since we are unlikely to encounter these lessons for a long time, I want to encourage everyone to read them and reflect on where they see God’s care in their lives.

Weekly Meditation
Valentine’s Day Thoughts

On this Valentine’s Day, I thought I would offer a quote from Martin Luther (1483-1546) from his sermon, The Estate of Marriage. Luther was not only a great theologian and founder of the Lutheran Church he also understood the simple pleasures of home, children, and marriage.  His words remind us that the love we share with one another is truly a gift from God.

Now the ones who recognize the estate of marriage are those who firmly believe that God himself instituted it, brought husband and wife together, and ordained that they should beget children and care for them. For this they have God's word, Genesis 1 [:28], and they can be certain that he does not lie. They can therefore also be certain that the estate of marriage and everything that goes with it in the way of conduct, works, and suffering is pleasing to God. Now tell me, how can the heart have greater good, joy, and delight than in God, when one is certain that his estate, conduct, and work is pleasing to God?

Weekly Meditation
The Cross We Wear

Most of you have probably noticed the large silver cross I wear most Sundays. But, you may not have heard the story behind the cross.

My sister, Katharine, is a jeweler, and in 2001 my parents asked her to create a cross for me. The cross is handmade and has an ancient Byzantine coin set in the center. There are four things engraved on the back of the cross. The first is my name. Next there is the date 2001 which is the year I was commissioned as a probationary elder. When I was ordained in 2004, my sister added that date as well. Finally, there is a scripture reference: Matthew 5:16 - “let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”

I often think about that verse and what it means to wear a cross. I wonder if my actions give glory to my Father in heaven. I wonder if I am a shining light to others or if I am keeping my light hid under a basket.

Many of us wear clothing and jewelry that contain crosses or other Christian symbols. Today, I want us to think about the message we are sending to the world when we wear a cross. Are we asking the world to see Christ in our actions, or has the cross become just a fashion statement?
